Gold Hog®Vortex Matting vs. Gold Hog UR Mat This question comes up ALL the time. So, let's deal with it now and give you the results of our testing. 1- Vortex matting falls within the same class as our Gold Hog matting. We consider it an ACTIVE sluice mat. It is excellent for the recovery of small gold. It works well in lower water volume situations, but strong water flow WILL "over clean" the matting and cause loss of heavy material retention. 2- Vortex matting is rather inexpensive. (A good thing.) it is mass produced as a "conveyor belt" and like other mats, converted over to our industry. 3- It should be used when trying to focus on SMALL / fine gold, but should not, and can not retain medium to larger size gold, or flat gold that is approximately wider than 3 mm or roughly .125 inches. (1/8") 4- It should NOT be used in high water volume sluices. Volume over 1500
GPH will over clean the Vortex matting. It is an excellent concentrator
matting when used in low volume machines like the
GOLD CUBE. Gold Hog UR Mat: As you can see from the image below, the Gold Hog mat is designed to hold
BOTH large and small gold. It has MULTIPLE chambers and each one focuses on
holding different size gold.
The MULTI-CHANNEL design BURIES gold deep inside low flow chambers and
holds it very tightly.
